Thoughts, resources and links about design and fashion history
I trained as a fashion historian at The London College of Fashion, (MA-Fashion History). My dissertation was about dressmaking in professional ateliers and at home in 1950s Genoa. I used both primary and secondary sources. I interviewed my Mother, Giulia De Giovanni, who started work as a young apprentice and became a highly skilled dressmaker. Through her oral testimonials, I gathered very valuable material about sartorial elegance, the work practice in the ateliers in those days and issues of fashion consumption. I included in my dissertation photographic records from my Mother’s photo album and from Italian fashion magazines.
This photo dates from the mid 1950s and shows my Mother with one of her sartorial creations
